Recorded live on the 13th of May 1974 on the stage of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in Montreal, Canada.

The vocal wonder Maria Callas was born under the name Maria Cecilia Sophia Kalogeropoulos on 1 December 1923, entering a world that was soon to worship her father George first changed the Greek surname to ‘Callas’ in 1929. However, he was not able to keep the family together and Maria’s parents got divorced in 1936. The mother returned to her native Athens with Maria and Maria‘s older sister.

The future world star Maria Callas started enjoying her musical training during childhood, being given first piano lessons at the age of eight. She later studied singing at the National onservatory in Athens and even during her student days, Maria Callas knew how to thrill audiences – she was awarded a prize by the conservatory for her debut performance in the role of Santuzza.

In 1942 Maria Callas sang the role of ‘Tosca’ for the first time – the start of a unique career. Just five years later in Venice she was able to celebrate her first successes as an opera star in ‘Tristan und Isolde’ and ‘Turandot’. Her international breakthrough came in 1952 at the opera house in Mexico City – Maria Callas‘ interpretation of ’Lucia di Lammermoor‘ met with thunderous applause from the audience.

Maria Callas established her standing as an opera diva following spectacular performances at the Scala in Milan; it was here that she became a star and her performances were always either sensational – or a scandal. Such a scandal took place in Rome in 1958 during a gala performance of ‘Norma’ when the singer was forced to leave stage prematurely due to severe throat ache; the excessive number of
performances started exhausting the singer more and more.
